James A. Garfield was a popular hero whose rise from poverty to the White House was living proof of the American dream. Unfortunately, a deranged gunman shattered that dream only three months after Garfield was inaugurated. He would be far better remembered today had his Presidency not been so brief.
Garfield reached prominence during a turbulent period in American politics. In the aftermath of the Civil War, corruption dominated Washington. After every election, the "spoils system" invited victorious politicians to empty federal government offices of their employees in order to install their own supporters. Patronage, rather than policy, was the theme of the most heated political conflicts.
In the midst of this climate of government by greed, Garfield was elected to the Presidency by one of the narrowest margins in history. He was concerned with the "spoils system", but was in no position to change it. Yet he died at its hands. His assassin was a demented job seeker who saw Garfield as the reason he couldn't obtain federal employment.
In his absorbing biography, historian Peskin captures the full measure of an intriguing man. Praised by Publisher's Weekly as "a brilliant and skillful portrait of a man of many parts, and of the political and social landscape of his time," Garfield is an engrossing book.
